7-Day Challenge

Phone-Free Mealtime Pact

Make mealtimes phone-free together — 7 days of real conversations and reconnecting at the table.

7 days. One goal. Together.

Start Our Phone-Free Mealtime Pact
You're physically together at the table but mentally somewhere else entirely. Someone's checking messages, someone's scrolling news, and the kids are watching a video. The meal ends and you don't really know how each other's day went. Mealtimes used to be the heartbeat of family life — seven days to make them that again.

Your 7-Day
Journey

See exactly what happens — day by day.

A pact only works if everyone understands it and chooses it. Today you sit down as a family, explain what you're doing and why, and agree on the ground rules together.

Mini-task Announce the challenge at dinner. Let everyone — including kids — share one rule they want to add. Write them down. 8 min

Tonight you do it for the first time. Phones stay in another room. No exceptions. The awkward silence lasts about 90 seconds before something real fills the space.

Mini-task Have your first fully phone-free meal. If silence happens, try: "Best thing about today?" and let whoever wants to answer. 7 min

Phone-free meals are only as good as the conversations that fill them. Today you bring a conversation starter to the table — something that gets everyone talking without it feeling forced.

Mini-task Use this starter at dinner: "If you could have any superpower for one week, what would it be and why?" Everyone answers. 7 min

Three meals in, something has shifted — even slightly. Today you pay attention to it. What feels different? What conversations happened that wouldn't have happened with phones present?

Mini-task After dinner, each person says one thing they noticed or enjoyed that they wouldn't have if phones were on the table. 5 min

Fill the mealtime with something playful. A simple game, a story chain, or a question card deck. The goal: laughter at the table without needing a screen to create it.

Mini-task Play one simple mealtime game: each person adds one sentence to build a shared story, or play "two truths and a lie." 10 min

A simple mealtime ritual used in schools and families around the world: each person shares one rose (highlight) and one thorn (hard moment) from their day. Seven minutes, everyone feels heard.

Mini-task Do the Rose & Thorn at dinner. No fixing, no advice — just listening and acknowledging. 7 min

Seven days of better meals. Now decide together what you're keeping. Which meals stay phone-free? Which rituals are you adopting? This only works if you all choose it.

Mini-task Vote as a family: which meals per week stay phone-free? Pick one recurring mealtime ritual from the week to keep. 8 min

What You’ll Both Walk
Away With

Real results. Not just feelings.

🗣️

Real Conversations at Every Meal

You'll have replaced default silence and scrolling with actual exchanges — about each other's days, thoughts, and small stories that matter.

🤝

A Family Pact You All Chose

Because everyone had a voice in making the rules, the phone-free habit is much more likely to stick — it's not imposed, it's shared.

🎲

At Least One Mealtime Ritual

Whether it's Rose & Thorn, a question game, or a story chain — you'll leave the week with at least one ritual that makes mealtimes something to look forward to.

👨‍👩‍👧

Kids Who Feel More Heard

Undivided attention at the table — even for 20 minutes — is one of the most powerful things parents can give. Kids notice. And they open up.

Why This Works Better Than
Without Support

Doing It Alone
With CHAIVARA
× You tell yourself "we should have dinner without phones" but someone always checks theirs first.
The Day 1 pact makes it official and shared — no one breaks it because everyone agreed to it together.
× Dinner is quiet — not the comfortable kind. Everyone's elsewhere mentally.
From Day 3 onwards, a conversation starter or game fills the silence with something real.
× You try phone-free meals and the kids complain until you give in.
Because the kids helped make the rules on Day 1, they're invested in the pact, not fighting it.
× A phone-free meal happens once, feels nice, then gets forgotten.
Day 7 turns the experiment into a shared decision about which meals stay phone-free permanently.

Questions About
This Challenge

Set up a simple rule: if you're genuinely expecting something urgent, put the phone on a corner of the table face-down and only check if it rings. For everything else, it waits.

Teenagers respond to being treated as equal participants — the Day 1 pact gives them a say in the rules. When teens co-create the agreement, compliance goes up significantly.

Start with one meal — usually dinner. Once it feels natural, you can add breakfast or lunch. The challenge is designed around one daily meal so the commitment stays realistic.

If your schedules are different, commit to at least one shared meal per day where the pact applies. The challenge works even with a single daily overlap.

This Is Made
for You Both If…

  • Meals have become a time everyone looks at their own screen instead of each other
  • You can't remember the last time dinner involved a real conversation
  • Your kids barely look up from their devices at the table
  • You want to reconnect as a family but don't know where to find the time

Voices From

“Day 1 was rough — our son (13) was furious. But we let him help make the rules and by Day 4 he was the one reminding us to put our phones away. Completely turned around.”

“We'd been eating dinner with the TV on for three years. The pact gave us permission to just... talk. By Day 3 we were laughing every night. I'd forgotten what that felt like.”

“Rose & Thorn on Day 6 became our family's thing. Our youngest (6) especially loves it. She saves moments from her day specifically to share at dinner now.”
